The Alte Werra nature reserve is located in the municipality of Gerstungen in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It extends northeast of the core town of Gerstungen and south of the Neustädt district along the Werra . On the western edge of the area which extends country road L 1021 and on the south edge the L extends 1020. West of the A 4 .

The 257.8 hectare area with the NSG no. 214 was placed under nature protection in 1996.
