Euphorbia Bussei is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia bussei forms trees up to about 10 meters high. The triangular branches are spread out and are up to 15 centimeters thick. They are divided into egg-shaped sections by constrictions, which are up to 15 centimeters long. The strongly winged edges are studded with bulky teeth that are 1 to 3 centimeters apart. The thorn shields have grown together to form a 1.5 to 5 millimeter wide horn rim. The strong thorns are 5 to 20 millimeters long, but can also be up to 35 millimeters long in young plants. In addition to the 1 millimeter long stipule spines, additional thorns up to 2 millimeters long are formed on both sides of the inflorescence.

The inflorescence consists of five to eight simple cymes on stems 5 to 8 millimeters long. The cyathia reach 8 millimeters in diameter. The elongated nectar glands are about 2 millimeters wide and 4 millimeters long. They collide and are colored yellow. The ovary has a three-lobed flower cover. The clearly lobed fruit is about 9 millimeters long and 19 millimeters wide. It stands on a stem up to 6 millimeters long and contains the spherical seeds. These are about 4 millimeters in size and have a smooth surface.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia bussei is common in Tanzania and Kenya .

The species was first described in 1903 by Ferdinand Albin Pax .

A distinction is made between the following varieties:

  • Euphorbia bussei var. Bussei ; Distribution: in the east of Tanzania on stony slopes and in sandy soils in deciduous forests at altitudes of 350 to 1000 meters, a synonym for this variety is Euphorbia mbaluensis Pax (1904)
  • Euphorbia bussei var. Kibwezensis (NEBr.) S. Carter ; Distribution: in the south-east of Kenya and in the north-east of Tanzania on stony slopes in the deciduous forest at altitudes of 400 to 2000 meters, in contrast to the trunk species, the branches are square and the sections are almost circular in cross-section, the horn rim at the edges is 2 to 8 Millimeters wide, the inflorescence consists of three to seven cymes on stems 3 to 5 millimeters long, the cyathia reach 8 to 10 millimeters in diameter, the nectar glands are about 2.5 millimeters wide and 5 millimeters long and the stalks of the fruits become up to 5 millimeters long. A synonym for this variety is Euphorbia kibwezensis N.E.Br. (1912).
