description
The Bernshauser cowl measures 250 m in diameter, the water level is at a height of ( 383.6 m above sea level ) and is sunk up to 40 m deep into the middle red sandstone . It belongs to a group of Erdfallweihern between Urnshausen and Roßdorf caused by the collapse of cavities of the upcoming underground Zechstein - Salinars have emerged. The surrounding red sandstone slopes are covered with deciduous forest down to the bank of the pond. In the north-west the Bernshausen cowl is not deepened. There an overflow - the Froschbach - has formed, which stretches to the northwest like a trench almost to the outskirts of Bernshausen. The lake is meromictic and accordingly only warms up close to the surface in summer.

The Bernshauser Kutte is placed under nature protection as a geotope . The designation as a nature reserve took place on October 16, 1942 and today covers an area of 13.06 hectares. It is also part of the FFH protected area No. 87 “Forstloch-Pleß-Stoffelskuppe-Bernshäuser Kutte” of the Thuringian regional registration and thus part of the European Natura 2000 protected area system . Despite the ban, the lake is illegally used as bathing water . The bank areas are therefore severely impaired by the impact.
