The Sommertal nature reserve is located in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It extends east of Fischbach / Rhön , a district of the town of Kaltennordheim in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen . The B 285 runs west of the area and the Fischbach flows on the northern edge.

The 253.1 hectare area with NSG no. 239 was placed under nature protection in 1990. It is part of the 14.55 km² large FFH area Ibengarten - Wiesenthaler Switzerland - Sommertal .
