Landeck Castle

The ruins of Landeck Castle are located at around 470 m on a rock spur of the Landecker Berg north-east of the Oberlengsfeld district of Schenklengsfeld in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district .

history

The Spornburg was built in 1234 by the Hersfeld Abbey as an official castle. 1317 a Hersfeld bailiff is announced in "Landecke"; after that, the office was often pledged in the 14th and 15th centuries - most recently to Mainz , from which it was redeemed in 1454. During the Peasants' War in 1525 there was considerable unrest in Hersfeld and the surrounding area. Landgrave Philipp von Hessen came to the aid of the distressed abbot, put down the uprising and annexed large parts of the imperial abbey, including the Landecker Amt , to cover his costs . It was probably during this time that the castle was destroyed.

The remaining wall remains of the curtain wall were restored and fortified in 1982.

According to his handwritten autobiography, the journalist August Spies was born in the ruins of the castle in 1855.
