The Dreienburg castle ruins , popularly known as Alter Keller , are the ruins of a spur castle in the south- eastern part of the Dreienberg in the district of the Hessian municipality of Friedewald in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district .
Geographical location
The Dreienburg castle ruins are located in the Kuppenrhön , a part of the Rhön low mountain range , near Lautenhausen (southeastern part of Friedewald) on the eastern slope of the Linsenkuppe ( 515 m above sea level ) and thus on the southeast part of the Dreienberg (max. 525 m above sea level ) , the northernmost mountain of the Rhön.
The spur of the terrain , on which the ruin is located at around 441 m above sea level, protrudes in an easterly direction into the valley of the Starkelsbach , a western tributary of the Werra . From here, nowadays only through the trees, you have a wide view of the Werra Valley and the Kuppenrhön (including Landeck Castle ). Lautenhausen lies to the northeast, about 105 m below the ruin, which is practically on the boundary of Friedewald and its district.
history
The time when the castle was built , which was probably commissioned by the Hersfeld Abbey as a protective castle against Hesse, is not known.
The first documentary mention took place in 1257, when the lord of the castle Hertwig von Drigenberg was named. In 1296 a Wolprat was called de Drigenberck. The ruin was mentioned for the last time in 1641.
investment
The ruins of the castle ruins of Dreienburg, which are now a cultural monument , can still be seen from the watchtower and the neck moat .
