The Altwehrda castle ruins are located north of the Haunetal district of Wehrda in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in Hesse .
location
The ruin lies on the plateau of the Fulda-Haune-Tafelland , on the left side of the Hirschelbachtal, at an altitude of 249 meters above sea level . Today the ruin lies between fields on open land, about 700 meters north of the center of Wehrda.
About 1.3 kilometers east in the Haunetal is the Sinzigburg and 2.5 kilometers east, already in the Rhön, is the Hauneck castle .
description
The Niederungsburg and presumably moated castle today has an approximately square basic shape. The hill of ruins is overgrown with trees and has only a few remains of sandstone walls. Only in the north-west is there a larger remnant of the wall, which probably belonged to a tower.
Remnants of a moat around the castle are said to have been visible in the 1980s, but have now completely disappeared due to agricultural use around the ruins. The ditch was probably filled with water by dams on the Hirschelbach.
About 200 meters southwest of the castle is the small "stately" cemetery, in which there are still graves from the 18th and 19th centuries of the Barons von Trümbach. The von Campenhausen family uses the cemetery to this day.
history
It is not known when the castle was built. The first documentary evidence dates back to 1308, when Abbot Heinrich V. Graf von Weilnau pledged the "Werdowe" house to the von Trümbach ministerial family , who received it in 1310 as a fief. This family (formerly called Trubenbeche or Trubenbach in documents) probably had their first headquarters in Altwerda. There is also the possibility that they were previously owned by the Sinzigburg .
According to a document from 1483, Altwehrda was a refuge for the Neukirchen court. According to other documents, the castle was still inhabited in the 15th century. Around 1637, during the Thirty Years' War , the castle was destroyed and not rebuilt.
