Shan State Army-North
The Shan State Army-North (SSA-N) is an armed group in Myanmar , former Burma, that campaigns for Shan autonomy . The SSA-N is one of those groups in Myanmar that have stopped armed struggle against the Burmese military government, the State Council for Peace and Development (SPDC). Originally part of the Communist Party of Burma , members of the group mutinied against the CPB leadership in 1989. In negotiations with the SPDC, the SSA-N was able to achieve autonomy for its former area of operation. The Special Region 3 of the Shan State was created . The strength of the SSA-N is around 4,000 men.

The SSA-N consists of 3 brigades . The 1st Brigade, 3rd Brigade and the 7th Brigade.
Likelihood of confusion
The SSA-N should not be confused with the SSA-S, the Shan State Army-South . This has not agreed a ceasefire with the SPDC and continues to lead an armed struggle against the central government.
