The Shan State Army-South ( SSA-S ) is a resistance group of the Shan minority in Myanmar (Burma). One should not confuse the SSA-S with the SSA-N, the Shan State Army-North , a group that keeps a ceasefire with the Burmese central government.

The number of armed fighters is estimated at 10,000. The SSA-S was founded in January 1996 by former fighters of the Muang Tai Army in the Thai province of Chiang Mai . The commander of the SSA-S is z. Z. Col Yawd Serk . The headquarters of the SSA-S is located in Loi Taileng on the Thai-Myanmar border opposite the Pang Mapha district of the Thai province of Mae Hong Son .

The SSA-S is in constant combat with forces from the State Council for Peace and Development (SPDC) and with the United Wa State Army (UWSA). In April 2005, a combined military unit of SPDC and UWSA attempted to capture the SSA-S headquarters in Loi Taileng. The UWSA attacked the headquarters with 20 battalions (around 3000 soldiers). In just one day, the UWSA suffered 560 casualties and had to stop its attack.
