The monastery was founded in 1146 after being donated by Bishop Sigurd von Bergen. It was settled by Fountains Abbey (England) from the affiliation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . From the Lysekloster the Tautra monastery was settled in 1207 . The first abbot was Ranulf from York . The monastery was one of the richest in Norway; he owned 200 farms, including a grangie in Opedal in Hardanger with stone buildings. The monastery was in the course of the Reformation in 1536/37 by the Danish King Christian III. secularized. In the following two centuries the plant was demolished and used as a quarry, u. a. for the Rosenkrantzturm in Bergen . Excavations took place in 1822, 1838 and 1888/1889 (directed by Fortidminneforening). Restoration work took place around 1920. Today it is protected as a national monument.

Buildings and plant

The single-nave church was in the northeast of the enclosure. There were chapels on either side of the choir. The cloister had two floors, with the dormitory on the upper floor. The other rooms also corresponded to the scheme of medieval Cistercian monasteries.
