The munkeby abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in Norway . It was the northernmost Cistercian monastery on earth.

location

The ruined monastery is located near Okkenhaug in the Norwegian municipality of Levanger in Trøndelag , northeast of Trondheim .

history

Munkeby plan from 1813

The monastery was founded around 1150, at the latest in 1180, when it is mentioned, and probably moved to the nearby monastery Tautra (also Tutterø) in 1207 , the grangie of which it appears later. It possibly goes back to Lysekloster from the filiation of Clairvaux via Fountains Abbey in England . An attempt to revive the monastery around 1470 failed. The monastery burned down in 1567.

Church ruins from the east

The approx. 34 by 10 meter large, St. The church, consecrated to Brettiva, served as a parish church until 1589. The existing church ruin has a nave and a choir with side chapels on both sides of the choir. The outer walls are preserved up to a height of 1 to 2 meters. The church was later used as a quarry. The monastery buildings were made of wood. Excavations took place in 1910. The ruin has been owned by the Norwegian Heritage Association ( Fortidsminneforeningen ) since 1967 .

Start-up

In 2007, the main building of the Cîteaux Monastery in France decided to found a new monastery in Munkeby, the first in the last 500 years. A guest house has been completed and is located approximately 1.5 km from the medieval ruin. Four French monks moved there in autumn 2009.
