Amphoe Pang Mapha ( Thai : อำเภอ ปาง มะ ผ้า ) is the northernmost district ( Amphoe - administrative district) of Mae Hong Son Province . Mae Hong Son Province is located in the northern part of the northern region of Thailand .

In Shan language, Mapha ( มะ ผ้า ) or Makpha ( หมาก ผ้า ) means lime, and Pang (Thai: ปาง ) means hill, so the name could be translated as lime hill.

Pang Mapha is bordered by Pai County ( Amphoe ) to the east, Mueang Mae Hong Son to the south and west and Shan State to the north .

history

There are several prehistoric sites in the Pang Mapha area. The best known is the Ghost Cave ( Phimaen Cave , Thai: ถ้ำ ผี แมน , Tham Phi Maen ), which was discovered in the 1960s by the American anthropologist and archaeologist Chester Gorman. The cave was open from 9000 to 5500 BC. Inhabited by hunters and gatherers. Two other caves are of importance, the Banyan Valley Cave (Thai: ถ้ำา ปุ ง ฮุ ง - Tham Pung Hung , "Banyan Valley Cave") and the Tham Nam Lot (Thai: ถ้ำ น้ำ ลอด ), through which one can take boats A navigable brook ("Nam Lot") flows.

During the Second World War, the Japanese army built a road from the provincial capital to Pai and on to the Burmese border. Later the local residents used the street to do business. Ban Sop Pong Mae Umong ( บ้าน สบ ป่อง แม่ อู มอง ) was used as an overnight stop. In 1948 a police station in Pang Mapha was established by the Bangkok government. In 1977 the road was expanded. This expansion attracted many residents from other districts and provinces, as well as refugees from nearby Myanmar . Deforestation and smuggling, especially of drugs, were the negative consequences of the road expansion. In order to create an effective administration, a "branch circle" ( King Amphoe ) was established on April 1, 1987 by separating the two Tambon Sappong and Pang Mapha from the Amphoe Mueang Mae Hong Son . Later, on December 5, 1996, Pang Mapa was granted full amphoe status.

refugees

Fighting continues on the Burmese side of the border. The area north of Pang Mapha is ruled by minority armies, including the Shan State Army-South (SSA-S), which has its headquarters there, and the United Wa State Army (UWSA). In 2005 there was considerable fighting between the two armed groups. These skirmishes often generate a stream of refugees across the border. There are also said to be drug laboratories, especially the UWSA.
