Amphoe Mae Sariang (in Thai อำเภอ แม่สะเรียง ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) along the Yuam River in the west of the Mae Hong Son Province . The Mae Hong Son Province is located in the northern region of Thailand . The district capital is also called Mae Sariang. Both the architecture and the large proportion of Burmese Muslims are reminiscent of the proximity to Myanmar .

geography

The area around Mae Sariang is very mountainous and has dense forests. Therefore it is a popular destination for refugees from Myanmar.

Neighboring districts (clockwise from north): Mae La Noi district in Mae Hong Son province, Mae Chaem and Hot district in Chiang Mai province , Sop Moei district in Mae Hong Son province, and Kayin State and Kayah State of Myanmar .

The Salawin National Park is also located in this district.

The main river of Mae Sariang is the Yuam, part of the border with Myanmar is formed by the Saluen (also Salween , Thai: Salawin , แม่น้ำ สาละ วิน ).

history

In 1900, the administration of this area was formally established as a county (amphoe) of Mae Hong Son Province. Its original name was Mueang Yuam ( เมือง ย ว ม ), but it was changed to Mae Sariang in 1917.

Mae Sariang County is divided into seven tambon ("subdistricts" or "parishes"), which are further subdivided into 77 muban ("villages").

Local administration

There are three municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Mueang Yuam Tai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เมือง ย ว ม ใต้ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Mae Sariang.
  • Mae Yuam (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล แม่ ย ว ม ) consisting of the complete tambon Mae Yuam.
  • Mae Sariang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล แม่สะเรียง ) consisting of the parts of the Tambon Ban Kat, Mae Sariang.

There are also five " tambon administration organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO)

  • Ban Kat (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล บ้าน กา ศ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Ban Kat.
  • Mae Khong (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล แม่ คง ) consisting of the complete tambon Mae Khong.
  • Mae Ho (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล แม่ เหาะ ) consisting of the complete tambon Mae Ho.
  • Sao Hin (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล เสา หิน ) consisting of the complete Tambon Sao Hin.
  • Pa Pae (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ป่า แป๋ ) consisting of the complete tambon Pa Pae.
