Amphoe Mueang Mae Hong Son ( Thai : อำเภอ เมือง แม่ฮ่องสอน ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in Mae Hong Son Province . The Mae Hong Son Province is located in the northern region of Thailand . The capital of the county is called Mae Hong Son .

Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise): Amphoe Pang Mapha and Pai of Mae Hong Son province, the Amphoe Galyani Vadhana and Mae Chaem of Chiang Mai Province , Amphoe Khun Yuam again in the province of Mae Hong Son and the Kayah State of Myanmar .

history

Mae Hong Son originally belonged to the Lan Na kingdom . The area was later disputed between Burma and Thailand, but due to its location it was never the site of major disputes.

On May 10, 1910, the Ministry of the Interior upgraded Mueang Mae Hong Son to a fourth grade city of Monthon Phayap. At that time it consisted of the four districts of Mueang Mae Hong Son, Mueang Yuam (today Amphoe Mae Sariang), Pai and Khun Yuam.

In 1917 the district of Mueang was renamed Muai To ( ม่อย ต่อ ). In 1938 it was renamed Mueang Mae Hong Son. In 1987, the northeastern part of the county was split off to create the new Pang Mapha County.
