About this picture

Burghaun is a market town in the eastern Hessian district of Fulda .

geography

The municipality of Burghaun and its districts are located in the middle of the Hessian Kuppenrhön, also known as the Hessian skittles - the northernmost part of the Hessian Rhön . When viewed from the air, the nine basalt cones form a rosette formation that gives the landscape its name with the “cone ball” - the stubble mountain. Geologically , Burghaun and the surrounding communities lie in a prehistoric inland sea , which can be seen in the various sediment formations on many hikes around Burghaun .

Burghaun is, as the name suggests, in the Haune valley - a tributary of the Fulda - and is characterized by its course.

Neighboring communities

Burghaun borders in the north on the communities Haunetal ( district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg ) and Eiterfeld , in the east and south on the city of Hünfeld and in the west on the city of Schlitz ( Vogelsbergkreis ).

structure

The entire municipality of Burghaun consists of the districts (and named districts )

There are also the hamlets of Klausmarbach, Mahlertshof and Hartmannshöhe, which have no status as districts.

history

Baroque churches seen from the Haune, with the castle walls still intact

The first documentary mention is dated to the year 1262, but the foundation is estimated to the 9th century. The Haune river gave the place its name. The local knights of Haune were in frequent feuds with the prince abbots of Fulda , which earned them the reputation of robber barons there.

Burghaun received partial town charter in the 14th century. The town of Burghaun consisted of the buildings of today's “Stadtstraße”, the Protestant church and the gatehouse, which was the only entrance through the city wall . Today the wall only exists in small parts. The village consisted of the other houses and farms. Burghaun lost its town charter on February 23, 1854 by a decree of the Hessian government of the province of Fulda .

The northern part of the Fulda region has been shaped by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation to this day . The principle of cuius regio, eius religio (“the denomination of rule is also that of the subjects”) governed religious affiliation. This is particularly evident in the neighboring Burghaun churches.

According to a legend , the prince abbot of Fulda offered the Burghaun citizens, who at the time were mostly Protestant , to build a community barn on the site of the old castle "derer zu Haune". The Catholic Church later emerged from this building project. In truth, however, there was already a church in the castle area in the 14th century.

Incorporations

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent communities of Hünhan, Rothenkirchen and Steinbach were incorporated as part of the regional reform in Hesse . On February 1, 1971, the municipality of Gruben followed. On August 1, 1972, by virtue of state law, the newly formed Kiebitzgrund municipality was added on October 1, 1971 through the merger of the towns of Großenmoor, Hechelmannskirchen, Langenschwarz and Schlotzau .
