history

For the first time, the location appeared as “ Bifang ” (cleared land) including 13 “unfree” on February 1, 826 in a deed of donation from the Franconian Count Poppo I to the Fulda monastery . However, according to the strict rules of the Hessian State Archives, this document does not count as the first mention, as the place is not designated as a " villa ". This is only the case in an Urbar (property register) of the Fulda Monastery , the so-called Codex Eberhardi, which was created between 1155 and 1165 . As a result, numerous knight families resided there or were wealthy, for example the lords of Steinau called Steinrück , those of Ebersberg called von Weyhers , those of Thüngen, those of Berlepsch, the Specht von Bubenheim, those of Merlau and others. The last nobles were the von Mansbach, whose last property was bought back by the Fulda prince Adalbert I von Schleiffras in 1709. All had their own inns and mills, which their feudal people were obliged to use. In Poppenhausen there was a large moated castle , with over 10,000 square meters the largest in the area, which was first mentioned in 1327 and was destroyed in 1459, at least above ground. The cellars of this former Poppenhausen castle have been preserved under various inns and Von-Steinrück-Platz .

In 1635 the plague raged in the area. Out of gratitude that the Pestgefahr was over, the journeyman John built Farnung 1639 a shrine on the Popp Hausener local mountain, "stone" called. On June 21, 1647, the community vowed to make a pilgrimage to this wayside shrine every year . This local plague and hail holiday has been celebrated every year since then with a pilgrimage to the chapel on the stone, with the text of the pledge from 1647 being read out.

On September 30, 1903, a fire in the town center devastated 18 residential houses with outbuildings including the rectory and old school. Already at the turn of the 19th / 20th Century opened the place for summer visitors, so the course was set for today's tourism. On December 15, 1961, the core community of Poppenhausen was awarded the title climatic health resort by the Hessian Ministry of Economics .

Territorial reform

On August 1, 1972, in the course of the Hessian regional reform , the once independent communities Abtsroda (with its districts Tränkhof and Sieblos), Gackenhof , Poppenhausen an der Wasserkuppe, Rodholz and Steinwand , became the larger community of Poppenhausen. This also received parts of the neighboring communities of Dipperz, Ebersburg and Hofbieber with around 100 inhabitants at that time.

badges and flags

The coat of arms and the flag were officially awarded on October 29, 1951 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.

Poppenhausen coat of arms
Blazon : "In the shield split by silver and black, three five-spoke wheels (2: 1) in mixed up colors."
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of the Lords of Steinau called Steinrück , who had extensive possessions in various places in the Rhön region in the late Middle Ages. You were not only in Poppenhausen, but also, for example, in the Burglau local lords, which is still Bavarian today, mostly as feudal bearers of the Würzburg monastery and the imperial abbey of Fulda. Instead of the family castle in Steinau, which was destroyed in 1287, they built Poppenhausen Castle. Since 1619 the place was fuldisch, from 1806 to 1866 it belonged with Gersfeld to Bavaria.

  • The Catholic parish church of St. George was built from 1609 to 1621. From 1857 to 1861 it was expanded with the construction of a transept and a new choir , and from 1993 to 1994 it was restored in neo-Gothic style. In the tower of the church there is a four-part ringing of bronze bells from the Otto bell foundry from Hemelingen / Bremen. The bells have the strike tone series d - f sharp - a - h and the following diameters: 1428, 1134, 953, 850. In front of the church there is a high stone cross from 1763 and the market square fountain from 2015.
  • The mountain and pilgrimage chapel of St. Maria auf dem Stein is located northwest of Poppenhausen. It was built before 1714. In the vicinity there is a wayside shrine from 1639 and a stone pulpit (preaching chair) from 1736. There are 14 stations of the cross from 1767 with an imposing crucifixion group from 1768 along the way .
  • On the local mountain Stein ( Kalvarienberg ) there is also a Marien or Lourdes grotto , which was created in 1893 and expanded in 1959.
  • In the Sieblos Museum in the town hall, fossil finds from the brown coal of Sieblos are on display.
  • North of the Abtsroda district, the Abtsroda master blacksmith Damian Ebert built a Marienkapelle on the mountain in 1898. He had previously made the second pilgrimage to Lourdes .
  • The natural Guckaisee lies around four kilometers east of Poppenhausen .
  • On September 7, 2012, the 2.5 km long themed love path was opened.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

The originally agricultural community now offers around 1400 jobs. The determining economic factor is tourism, which offers numerous jobs in summer and due to the relatively snow-reliable location also in winter. In addition to the local trade and industry, there are also some medium-sized industrial companies located here; Among other things, the Schleicher company , a world-famous manufacturer of gliders , and the regional Pappert bakery , which goes back to a family of bakers from the 17th century, have their headquarters in the community.

traffic

Poppenhausen is three kilometers south of the federal highway 458 Fulda - Hilders . The closest train stations are Lütter , Altenfeld and Gersfeld (Rhön) on the Rhön Railway south of Poppenhausen , each between six and about eight kilometers away. There are also direct bus connections to Fulda through the local transport company Fulda mbH.
