history

Location of Großenlüder ( Luder ) on a map of the Fulda monastery from 1574

Grossenlüder was first mentioned in a document in 822, when a chapel built by Abbot Eigil was consecrated by the Archbishop of Mainz . This chapel can still be visited.

In the Middle Ages the place developed into an administrative center. Grossenlüder was the seat of a Fulda office and court. Noble families of the place were the lords of Lüder and the lords of Döring. The knight Wigand von Lüder is regarded as the ancestor of the reformer Martin Luther . Wigand is said to have settled in the area of Möhra (West Thuringia), the birthplace of Martin Luther's father, and received his newly founded seat from the abbot of Fulda as a fief. In view of this, the existing Luther family also believed that they could derive their descent from the Buch sex von Lüder . Between the years 1302 and 1308, Wigand von Lüder appears seven times as a witness in purchase, sale and lease agreements concerning the Frankenstein reign and the Salzungen office .

The village of Großenlüder was surrounded by ramparts and moats. Around 1220, a second, larger church was built in Großenlüder, the choir room of which has also been preserved. At the end of the Middle Ages the office and court of Großenlüder were pledged by the Fulda prince abbot to the Fulda monastery chapter, which became master of office and court. Thus, Großenlüder received a special position within the Fulda bishopric.

The baroque church was consecrated in 1735.

After the secularization of 1802, Großenlüder shared the fate of the entire bishopric of Fulda , the place came to Orange-Nassau until 1806 Napoléon Bonaparte annexed the province of Fulda. In 1810 the province became part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and after a year-long Prussian administration, the place became part of the Electorate of Hesse .

After the German Civil War in 1866, Kurhessen and thus Grossenlüder became part of the Kingdom of Prussia . The place formed a so-called Oberamt Großenlüder (judicial district) for the entire western district of Fulda . The Lüder court was only dissolved in 1940 .

Incorporations

On December 31, 1970, in the course of administrative reform in Hesse , until then independent neighboring municipality Eichenau voluntarily incorporated . On December 31, 1971, Kleinlüder and Uffhausen were added. Bimbach, Lütterz and Müs followed by state law on August 1, 1972.
