Life and work

politics

Silvia Hillenbrand has been a member of the SPD since 1969 and was chairwoman of a local Fulda association for 13 years. From 1989 to 2002 she was a city councilor in Fulda. From 1991 to 2003 she was a member of the Hessian SPD state parliament, elected via the state list. There she was, among other things, forest policy spokesperson. From April 26, 1995 she was deputy group leader.

During her time as a member of parliament, she spent several “practical weeks” in various companies in her constituency, including on a farm. This attempt to get to know grassroots problems better also found recognition among local politicians from competing parties.

On November 10, 2002 Hillenbrand was directly elected mayor of the community of Großenlüder with 52.7 percent of the vote. In 2003 she took up her position. After six years, she decided not to run again. According to their own statement, the working atmosphere within the community council and the community board, where the SPD does not have a majority, was decisive.

From 2010 to 2013 Hillenbrand volunteered two hours a week as a reading mentor at a school for people with learning disabilities.

She is the initiator and co-founder of the Grossenlüder Community Foundation, which was recognized by the Kassel regional council in 2010 and is a member of the board of directors.

Since 2009 she has been working on a voluntary basis in the St. Elisabeth Hospice in Fulda as a dying companion. In 2016 she took over the deputy chairmanship of the Hospiz-Förderverein Fulda eV
