About this picture

Eichenzell is a municipality in the eastern Hessian district of Fulda .

geography

location

Eichenzell lies at the transition between the western Rhön foreland , a hilly landscape in front of the Hessian part of the Rhön in the direction of Vogelsberg , in the east and Kerzeller Fliedetal in the west. The core town is located about 7 km south-southeast of the district town of Fulda on the east bank of the Fulda River . In this north-northwest of the district opens Löschenrod the direction of the district Kerzell coming lilac that there from Döllbach is fed.

Neighboring municipalities and municipality structure

The community borders in the north on the city of Fulda and the community Künzell (district Engelhelms ), in the east on the community Ebersburg , in the south on the community Kalbach and in the west on the community Neuhof (all in the district of Fulda).

In addition to the main town of Eichenzell, the municipality includes the districts of Büchenberg (with the hamlet of Zillbach), Döllbach , Kerzell (with the hamlet of Steinberg), Lassenrod , Lütter , Rönshausen (with the hamlet of Melters), Rothemann and Welkers .

history

The Eichenzeller Schlösschen, west side
The Eichenzeller Schlösschen, north side

The core village of Eichenzell was first mentioned in 927 in a deed of donation from the Fulda monastery . According to Georg Landau , the origin of the place was a cell that was destroyed by the Huns in 920, then restored by Abbot Haicho (917–923) and named Haichoniscelle . Other villages in the municipality were mentioned earlier: Lütter 815, Döllbach 852, Zillbach 859 and Rönshausen 866. It can be assumed that the area south of Fulda was cleared and settled according to plan soon after the monastery was founded in 744 has been.

The Eichenzeller Schlösschen is the symbol of the community. It was built in the Renaissance style by the Lords of Ebersberg, called von Weyhers, around 1548. In its eventful history, it was used as a knight's residence, residential building, rectory, church, restaurant and community hall. Since 1971 it has been the seat of the municipal administration with a modern citizens' office, renovated in 2006/07 and modernized inside.

In 1971, Eichenzell was the Hessian state winner in the competition Our village should become more beautiful .

Territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1971, the large community of Eichenzell was formed from the previously independent communities of Eichenzell, Büchenberg (with the community of Zillbach, which was incorporated on April 1, 1970), Döllbach, Lütter, Rönshausen (with which on 1 April 1970 was incorporated). August 1968 incorporated community Melters), Rothemann and Welkers. In addition, on April 1, 1972, the Kerzell community and, by virtue of state law, August 1, 1972, the Lassenrod community. Local districts were established for all former municipalities . Eichenzell became the seat of the municipal administration.

"Wake-up eater"

The inhabitants of the core community have been called "Eichezeller Weckfresser" since ancient times. Such a “wake-up eater” is carved in stone in the garden of the Eichenzeller Schlösschen.

Until 1785 Eichenzell belonged to the parish Florenberg. On special holidays or on certain  pilgrimages  , the Eichenzeller went to the church on the Florenberg. Much to the annoyance of the other pilgrims from neighboring towns, the Eichenzeller are said to be the first to arrive despite the long way. By the time the others arrived on the mountain, the Eichenzeller had usually bought up all the festive festivities. Since on working days there was mostly only bread that had been baked weeks before, the  festive wake was  a popular change. Annoyed that the Eichenzeller had already acquired the entire stock for themselves, the neighboring communities referred to them as  Eichenzeller wake-up eaters . This name has stayed with them. However, this traditional name in this form only applies to the long-established citizens, while the new citizens of Eichenzell, jokingly reinterpreting the old term, refer to themselves as  bread lovers  .

Planning a reservoir

In the 1970s, a dam was planned in the Döllbach valley west of the Döllbach district in the direction of the neighboring town of Thalau , which was to serve as a water reservoir for the Frankfurt area and for energy generation. The resulting reservoir should be used as a recreational area. The supports of the A 7 motorway bridge were therefore made with special concrete , they would later have been in the middle of the lake. However, the reservoir plan was abandoned for various reasons, including because the water supply for the Frankfurt area could be secured differently. For the district of Döllbach, for the long time from the planning to the fault, this meant that no building permits were granted in the meantime.

Another curiosity in 2006 was the idea of creating  an airfield with a 1.5 kilometer long asphalt runway above the  Rhön industrial park. The entrepreneur Lutz Helmig wanted to invest there in order to set up a special landing pad for smaller jet aircraft . However, the idea failed due to the massive resistance of residents in Rönshausen.

Religions

Eichenzell is mainly Catholic; Catholic churches can be found in all districts. There is also a Protestant church (Trinitatiskirche) in the city center of Eichenzell. For the cath. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was supplied by the Otto bell foundry from Hemelingen / Bremen in 1904 and 1926 with four bronze bells each, but these were confiscated and melted down in the two world wars. After the war Otto delivered two bells in 1950 and another bell in 1964.
