Welkers is a district of the municipality of Eichenzell in the eastern Hessian district of Fulda .

geography

Welkers is located in the upper Fulda valley in the western foothills of the Rhön, southeast of Eichenzell. State road 3307 runs through the village . In the west, the federal highway 7 passes Welkers. The place has a stop on the Fulda – Gersfeld railway line .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1166, when a Bernger von Welkers ("Welgeres" = court of Waltgar) appears as a witness. The industrial park Rhön located in the district belongs to the place.

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Welkers was incorporated into the municipality of Eichenzell.

In 2016 the place celebrated its 850th anniversary.

Culture and sights

The splendid Gothic carved altar from 1509 in the new church is worth seeing. The Holy Cross Church was built from 1968 to 1970.

religion

The Catholic Holy Cross Church is a modern tent construction with a free-standing bell tower ( campanile ) that tapers to the top from 1968 to 1970. The church building is located (in the bridge meadows) in Rothemanner Straße in the center of the village.

The village has a community center and a kindergarten .
