Pachysphinx is a genus of butterflies from the family of swarmers (Sphingidae). The genus isnativeto the North American continent.
features
The moths are sturdy and have a vivid brown and gray wing pattern. The outer edges of the forewings are strongly fluted. The hind wings are reddish pink and have a noticeable bruise in the anal corner. The hind wings are covered by the forewings in the resting position and shown in a flash when disturbed as a deterrent. As with other species of the Smerinthini tribe , the mouthparts of the moths are severely receded and probably not functional.
The relatively large caterpillars have a lime green base color and each side of the back have a row of white vertical stripes, the last and strongest of which extends to the anal horn .
Occurrence and way of life
The genus is distributed nearctic from southern Canada to northern Mexico .
Systematics
Three species of the genus are known worldwide:
- Pachysphinx modesta (Harris, 1839)
- Pachysphinx occidentalis (Edwards, 1875)
- Pachysphinx peninsularis Cary, 1963
The taxonomic position of the subtaxa has not yet been fully clarified. Eitschberger suggested that the population of Pachysphinx occidentalis from the southwest of the United States should be recognized as an independent species and given the name Pachysphinx imperator, which was previously considered a synonym .
