The Bonifatiusbote is a Catholic church newspaper for the diocese of Fulda . It is published by the Episcopal See and has been published in weekly editions since 1884 - with an interruption from 1939 to 1946.

history

Towards the end of the Kulturkampf , on June 15, 1884, at the request of Andreas Schick , the first Bonifatiusbote appeared in the Fuldaer Actiendruckerei (today Parzeller ), in which the Fuldaer Zeitung had already been published ten years earlier . After just a few years, a print run of 20,000 was achieved. During the German Empire and the Weimar Republic, the diocesan journal developed into a mouthpiece for the Center Party .

The St. Elisabeth newspaper of the Catholic parishes in Kassel , which has been published weekly since 1892 , was included in the Bonifatiusbote in 1936.

During the National Socialist rule in the Third Reich , the publication of the Catholic newspaper had to be stopped in 1939. The new beginning took place after the end of the Second World War in May 1946 with a circulation of 35,000.

In the first quarter of 2019, the weekly newspaper had a sold circulation of 4,533 copies, of which 3,108 were subscribers.

As announced on May 24, 2019, the Boniface messenger will be discontinued at the end of 2023. The decision was justified with a dwindling readership. The planned discontinuation of the traditional paper was regretted in many places.

Cooperation with other diocese newspapers

After the widespread circulation continued to decrease, in 1972 and 1977 a cooperation with the two diocese newspapers Glaube und Leben ( Diocese of Mainz ) and Der Sonntag ( Diocese of Limburg ) arose through the Society for Church Journalism Mainz . Since then, the Mainz-based editorial team has provided national articles, while each newspaper maintains its own diocesan editorial office for diocesan topics. In addition to the three dioceses, the Rhein Main publishing group is a partner . As a member of the diocese press publishing group, the society is affiliated with eight other diocese newspapers.
