Josef Albinger was born on December 20, 1911 in Ellers (Neuhof). After studying theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Fulda and being ordained a priest , he worked as a chaplain in Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe) from 1937 and then from March 19, 1940 in Hanau. After collecting and distributing the sermons critical of the NSDAP by the Münster bishop Clemens August von Galen , he was arrested on November 8, 1941 after a house search by the Gestapo . Until February 5, 1942, he was imprisoned in the Frankfurt Gestapo prison on the basis of a protective custody order. From that date until April 4, 1945, he was a prisoner in the Dachau concentration camp . After the end of the Second World War he was, among other things, cathedral chaplain and then from 1950 to 1982 pastor and dean of Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe). Albinger died in 1995. His estate is in the Fulda diocesan archive.

From recorded conversations with him, Günter Sagan created a sound documentation about life in the Dachau concentration camp, for which there are also additional teaching materials for teachers.

Josef Albinger is an honorary citizen of Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe).
