The Faculty of Theology Fulda (formerly philosophical-theological university Fulda ) is a nationally recognized institution of higher education in sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fulda . The university sees itself in the tradition of the Benedictine monastery school , which has existed since the foundation of the Fulda monastery , and the grammar school opened in 1571 under Abbot Balthasar von Dernbach (1570–1606). Philosophical and theological chairs were established there in the course of the 17th century .

In 1734 Adolf von Dalberg founded the University of Fulda , which was dissolved in 1805. The priest training was then continued in the episcopal seminary . In particular, the German Bishops' Conferences in 1848 and 1874 and the Pope promoted the plan to establish a free Catholic university in Fulda. Between 1874 and 1886 the seminary was closed during the Kulturkampf . Under Bishop Georg von Kopp (1881–1887), the Philosophical-Theological School was opened together with the seminary in 1886.

During the tenure of Bishop Edward Schick was with effect from 22 December 1978, the philosophical-theological university Fulda by the Congregation for Catholic Education for the Faculty of Theology levied.

Since the founding of the Catholic Theological Seminary at the Philipps University of Marburg by the Episcopal See , there has been close cooperation with the University of Fulda. Many professors taught at both universities and there is also close cooperation in research. On February 4, 2015, Bishop Heinz Josef Algermissen decreed the affiliation of the Catholic Theological Seminar in Marburg as a scientific department of the Fulda Theological Faculty with a continuing location in Marburg .

The Fulda theological faculty is a fully developed theological faculty. Currently (2013) there are eleven full professors working at it, as well as academic assistants and lecturers . At the beginning of the 2010/11 winter semester, the new "Magister Theologiae" course was introduced. At the Fulda Theological Faculty, the academic degrees Bachelor of Arts, Magister, Diplom, Licentiate, Doctorate and, since 2001, habilitation can be obtained.

Affiliated to the university are the archive for pastoral work aids and the institute Bibliotheca Fuldensis . The library of the episcopal seminary, which is also the main library of the university, has more than 350,000 books and 300 current journals.

The Fulda Theological Faculty publishes the Fulda university publications and Fulda studies . The faculty is the training center for candidates for priesthood and for applicants for the service of the pastoral officer of the diocese of Fulda, but is also open to all interested women and men with general university qualifications. Most of their professors also work at the Catholic Theological Seminar of the Philipps University of Marburg , where around 100 students are enrolled for teaching and with which the faculty also cooperates through joint courses. The university organizes regular symposia and lecture series such as B. the contact study.
