history

First mention and name

The place was first mentioned as Elingshausen in 1317. According to legend, the village was founded by a hermit named Ellinc , hence the place name .

Historical forms of name were:

  • Elingshausen (1317)
  • Ellingishussin (1398)
  • Ellingshausen (1603)
  • Ehlingshaußen (1706)

middle Ages

The widow Elisabeth of Cunrad von Wallenstein sold the dish and “villam nostram Elinghausen,” our village Ellingshausen with all its accessories in 1317 with her sons Symon and Ludovicus. The von Wallenstein family was already living on the Neuwallenstein at that time . The buyers were Odegaba, the wife of the knight Henricus de Homberg and her sons Symon and Henricus. This happened on the 2nd holiday after Agatha (February 5th).

In 1398 the court and village "Ellingishussin" were owned by von Homberg. After the von Homberg family died out, Ellingshausen came to von Baumbach in 1427, presumably through the marriage of an heir daughter .

In the district Ellingshausen the former find deserted villages Finck Bach, Glasewald, glassworks and Rossbach.

Modern times

In 1715 the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel bought half of the Ellinghasuen court; 1749 then the entire jurisdiction. In 1742 Ellingshausen belonged to the Homberg office .

Eight men were forced from the village to join the Hessian troops, which were to fight on the British side in the American War of Independence . However, most of them deserted or were given leave of absence.

Heinrich Hagemann was mayor of the independent municipality of Ellingshausen from 1949 to December 31, 1971, when Ellingshausen merged with other municipalities to form the municipality of Knüllwald in the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse .

religion

There is evidence of a church owned by the von Homberg family as early as 1398. The Protestant church was built in the years 1781–84 as a hall with 3 × 1 window axis. An epitaph dated 1620 refers to an older church tradition in the area.
