WeeChat ( W ee E nhanced E nvironment for Chat ) is a free IRC client with no graphical user interface is, instead, one on curses based character-based user interface is used. The first version (0.0.1) was released on September 27, 2003.

Due to the modular structure, WeeChat can be expanded in its functionality through scripts and numerous available plugins.

Apart from the necessary functionality of a current IRC client, WeeChat offers additional functions such as:

Support of IPv6
Buffers can be searched for texts step by step
a spelling correction ( GNU_Aspell , Enchant )
Script support (for Perl , Python , Ruby , Lua , Tcl , Scheme , JavaScript , php )
Multiple character encodings support

Passwords can be saved in a separate file (encrypted)
