GNU Aspell or short Aspell is a free software for spelling checker for Unix-like systems and Windows . Aspell is part of the GNU project and will one day replace Ispell . It is already quite widespread under GNU / Linux . Like Ispell, Aspell can be used both as a stand-alone program and as a program library. One advantage of Aspell is an algorithm for the phonetic search for misspelled words, which works quite well for English . There are dictionaries for over 70 languages, including two for German (old and new spelling).

In the race for the successor to Ispell, Aspell has a strong competitor in Hunspell , as the OpenOffice.org spell checker Hunspell has already found its way into the web browsers Mozilla Firefox , Google Chrome and Opera as well as into the Apple operating system Mac OS X, which has been available since August 2009 Snow Leopard has found.
