Berndshausen is a part of the municipality Knüllwald in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district .

geography

Berndshausen is located on the northwestern edge of the Knüllgebirge , about 5 km east-northeast of the district town of Homberg (Efze) , on a flat ridge in the source area of ​​the Ertzelsbach . The district road 30 from Homberg to Beiseförth leads through the village. Neighboring towns are Sipperhausen in the north, Oberbeisheim in the south-east, Welferode in the south-west and Dickershausen in the north-west. The federal highway 7 runs 1 km east of the village; the next driveway is about 5 km further north south near the Malsfeld district of Ostheim .

history

Berndshausen was first mentioned in a document in 1248 as "Bernishusin". The village was owned by the Landgrave of Hesse , which was given by the Landgraves as a fief from 1303 to their feudal people, the Lords of Riedesel . This lending, first made in 1303 by Landgrave Heinrich I , included the lower jurisdiction from 1376 at the latest and was renewed again and again until 1822. Even when the Riedesel sold the village to a citizen of Homberg in 1488, jurisdiction remained in their hands as a landgrave's fief; it was exercised from 1735 by Riedesel's court in Ersrode . Tithe income from Berndshausen stood throughout history various Lehnsinhabern to, foremost among them the Lords of Lowenstein .

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Berndshausen became part of the municipality of Knüllwald on January 1, 1974 by virtue of state law. A local district was formed for the district .

Population development

The population of the small town has hardly changed significantly since the middle of the 18th century, with the exception of the temporary increase due to bombed out people and displaced persons after the Second World War. In 1742 51 houses were counted, in 1747 there were 41 house seats . In 1834 there were 228 inhabitants. In 1885 there were 244, and in 1939 there were hardly any more at 254. In 1950, however, 396 inhabitants were counted, an increase of 56%. By 1961, however, that number had dropped back to 298, and today it's 238.

The evangelical village church is a fortified church from 1729. It stands within a rectangular walled fortified cemetery, with an old fortified gate from 1452 that is worth seeing began renovating the church at great expense . The renovation was financed by the regional church, the Office for Monument Preservation and the Knüllwald community. The church council organized a baking house party with a raffle to help fund the project . The proceeds were used to finance the purchase of new chandeliers and a font .
