The Efze is a 38.2 km long, southeastern and right tributary of the Schwalm in northern Hesse , Germany . Measured by the catchment area and the amount of runoff, it is by far the largest tributary of the Schwalm.
course
The Efze, which belongs to the river system and catchment area of the Weser , rises in the Knüllgebirge almost 2 km west of Schwarzenborn, which is not located on the Efze . Its source area is on the Wilsberg ( 598 m above sea level ) and Knüllköpfchen ( 633.8 m ). The origin of the right source stream, the contained Efzequelle , is located at 559 m on the eastern flank of the Wilsberg, that of the left source stream around 850 m northeast of it at about 562 m south of the Knüllköpfchen. A few hundred meters below both sources, both source streams unite in the Knüllteich ( 537.1 m ), the eastern part of which is open for swimming.
From the pond, the Efze flows southeast past Schwarzenborn and swings in a northerly direction before its Grebenhagen district , where the city moat joins. It flows through the Knüllwald district of Appenfeld , where the Hergetsbach joins, Wallenstein , where the Lochbach joins after flowing through the Lochbachklamm , Völkershain , where the longest Efze tributary joins the Breitenbach , Reddingshausen and Remsfeld .
After Remsfeld the Efze swings in a north-westerly direction and flows through the Homberg districts Relbehausen and Holzhausen and then through the southern parts of the core town of Homberg (Efze) . Shortly afterwards, when the Homberg district of Caßdorf passed to the east , where the Efze swings to the north, the Ohebach flows into it . Thereafter, the flow is tangent to the Homberger neighborhoods Mulhouse and mountains where the Klingelbach opens, and then this happens to Wabern associated lever .
Between the Wabern districts of Unshausen in the east and Uttershausen in the west, the Efze finally flows into the Schwalm tributary of the Eder from the west-southwest .
Renaturation
By 2008, above Homberg, under the name Efze Vital, as part of an FFH project in the Efzetal landscape protection area between Holzhausen and Relbehausen, a renaturation was implemented by creating alluvial forests with flood basins and making the weirs through with fish ladders.
Catchment area and tributaries
The catchment area of the Efze covers 220.543 km², of which the Ohebach flowing below Homberg drains almost half, while all other tributaries remain comparatively small.
The tributaries of the Efze include:
