Town Hall ( Hôtel de ville )

Chelles is a French municipality with 54,917 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France in the east of Greater Paris . It is on the Marne . The distance to the center of Paris is around 18 km. The Canal de Chelles runs through the urban area for a length of almost three kilometers . Chelles is the largest city in the department.

history

Chelles goes back to the Merovingian Palatinate Kala or Cala . There Chrodechild , the wife of Clovis I, founded a small women's convent. This built Bathilde , wife of the Frankish King Clovis II. To 658/659, in their time as regent of the kingdom, the convent of Notre-Dame-des-Chelles under the Rule of St. Benedict from. Bathilde was buried in this abbey in 680 , like her son, King Chlothar III. († 673). Until the abolition of the monastery in 1790 and its subsequent destruction, the history of the city is closely linked to this monastery.

The city name has been used in today's spelling since the French Revolution .

Since the 17th century, the four-part coat of arms shows a golden lily on the top right and bottom left on a blue background and a black, five- rung ladder (French: échelles ) in the other fields on a silver background . Since 1990 a logo has been used instead of the coat of arms, which contains the two elements of the coat of arms - lily and ladder. It has recently been revised again.

traffic

As a municipality in the greater Paris area with extensive commuter traffic, the city is well connected to the center of the capital. With the S-Bahn ( RER ) line E can be reached from the Chelles-Gournay train station Paris Saint-Lazare in 20 minutes and the trains of the SNCF the Gare de L'Est in a good quarter of an hour.

The local bus network Apolo7 connects seven communities in the Bassin de Chelles with five lines . The wider area is served by the buses of the RATP , the state passenger transport company for the greater Paris area.

Chelles can be reached by car on national road 34, which passes the town. The A4 Autoroute and - two kilometers away - the A104 Autoroute (la Francilienne) are nearby .
