Vaires-sur-Marne (IPA: [vɛʁ syʁ maʁn]) is a French municipality with 13,327 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France . It is located in the east of the greater Paris area , the distance to the center of Paris is about 22 kilometers. The inhabitants are called Vairois .
geography
Vaires-sur-Marne is located on the Marne River . The Canal de Chelles with a larger lock system also runs through the urban area . The municipality is surrounded by Brou-sur-Chantereine in the north, Pomponne in the east, Torcy in the south, Noisiel in the south-west and Chelles in the west and north-west.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1389. It was not until the 20th century that the population of the municipality increased (in 1921 there were 1,284 inhabitants).
traffic
The Vaires-Torcy train station in the center of Vaires-sur-Marne is on the Paris – Strasbourg railway line and on the LGV Est européenne . The former Route nationale 34 runs along the northern edge of the municipality .
Trivia
Vaires became internationally known through the movie The Train (1964) , the plot of which is partly set in this city; u. a. shows an Allied bombing raid on the SNCF facilities at Vaires station.
