Altenhagen is a settlement belonging to the Lichtenberg district in the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony.

geography

The settlement is made up of the former Altenhagen suburb and some residential buildings that were added later. Altenhagen is located southwest of a district road that connects Lichtenberg, one and a half kilometers to the north, with Oelber on the white road in the southwest.

The Lichtenberge, which form the northern part of the Salzgitter ridge , lie between Altenhagen and Lichtenberg . Here are also the Lichtenberg Castle and the Gaußstein .

To the southeast of Altenhagen, also in the Salzgitter ridge, lies a lake that covers the former Haverlahwiese opencast mine .

history

Altenhagen was first mentioned as Oldenhagen in a sales deed in 1342 , according to which Burghard von Saldern acquired the Vorwerk von Diettrich von Wallmoden . At that time, Altenhagen belonged to Lichtenberg Castle as an outbuilding. The name Oldenhagen is probably derived from the location of the place ("near the old Hagen") to the nearby Gebhardshagen Castle . From 1706 the Vorwerk belonged to the Lichtenberg domain as an agricultural subsidiary.

Altenhagen mine

For the mining history of the place see also: Altenhagen mine

As early as 1839, iron ore was mined in the Eschwege mine near Altenhagen and processed in the Wilhelmshütte in Bornum am Harz.

As part of the founding of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring and the expansion of the iron ore mining in Salzgitter, the construction of the nearby Haverlahwiese mine began in 1938 . For this pit, a 333 meter deep weather and cableway shaft was sunk near Altenhagen . Shaft hall, hoisting machine and boiler house, laundry, administration and workshops were built as daytime facilities. The ore mining in the Altenhagen field was stopped in February 1969, but the shaft remained in operation as an extending weather shaft until June 1982. In 1983 the shaft was filled and sealed. The facilities that were not leased were demolished.
