The Schachtsiedlung belongs to the district of Ohlendorf in the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony.

The settlement consists of seven apartment buildings and the buildings of the former iron ore mine in Ohlendorf. It is located in the southeast of the city of Salzgitter on the county road from Ohlendorf to Gielde , about one kilometer east of Salzgitter-Ohlendorf and one kilometer northwest of Gut Nienrode, which also belongs to Ohlendorf .

history

Former hoisting machine house Schacht Ohlendorf

As part of the construction of the Worthlah-Ohlendorf ore mine, the Ohlendorf mine was built from April 1940 onwards, on the western edge of today's settlement. From October 1939, residential camp 29 was built next to the mine to accommodate the workers . This consisted of nine barracks, four of which were initially used to accommodate the construction workers and later took in the miners who were employed in the mine. After the end of the war, the camp was used for some time to accommodate DPs ( displaced persons , i.e. people who could not return to their homeland after the end of the war), after which it was closed.

In the early 1950s, the Worthlah-Ohlendorf ore mine was expanded. For this purpose, the daytime facilities on the site near Ohlendorf were expanded, a loading station was built and a rail connection was laid. The Ohlendorf shaft, which was previously only used as a weather shaft, has been expanded into a haulage and cable car shaft. Together with the expansion of the mine, today's mine settlement was built in 1953/54, a housing estate to accommodate the miners. The Worthlah-Ohlendorf mine was closed on May 1, 1966, and the shaft hall and headframe in Ohlendorf were demolished in April 1969.
