history

St. George Church

Osterlinde was first mentioned in a document in 1151. The place is located on Hildesheimer Heerstraße and has suffered greatly from warlike events in the course of its history.

Between the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813, the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia . Osterlinde was assigned to the canton Gebhardshagen during this time .

Volunteer firefighter

With the law of April 2, 1874 concerning fire aid , there was a wave of volunteer fire brigades in the Duchy of Braunschweig in the following months. The Osterlinde volunteer fire brigade was founded on June 22nd, 1873 after the first captain, Albert Schwerdtfeger, had previously learned of the deliberations on this law as a member of the state parliament.

Population development

Since 2010 the population of Osterlinde has been almost constant with a little over 400 inhabitants.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a silver linden leaf on a green background and in the head of the shield a continuous red cross on a silver background. The linden leaf creates a connection to the place name, which is first attested in writing in 1151 as Lindethe . The green shield field stands for the largely preserved nature in the vicinity of the place. The cross in the head of the shield is an attribute of St. George , after whom the Georgskirche in town was named. The cross also reminds us that for centuries the place had close ties to religious institutions, such as the monasteries of Dorstadt, Wöltingerode and Steterburg.

The coat of arms was adopted as the local coat of arms of Salzgitter-Osterlinde at a citizens' meeting in March 2008.
