Sukopsmühle is a settlement belonging to the Bruchmachtersen district in the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony.

geography

The upper Sukopsmühle in the southwest and the lower Sukopsmühle in the northeast, each consisting of a few residential and courtyard buildings, belong to the settlement. The two mills are about 200 meters apart and are separated by the county road between the districts of Lichtenberg in the southwest and Salder in the east. Bruchmachtersen is only about one kilometer north of the settlement, with the federal motorway 39 running in between .

history

Both mills are among the oldest mills in the area of the city of Salzgitter. They were driven by Sukop's Mühlgraben , the two springs of which arise in the nearby Lichtenberg Mountains , part of the Salzgitter ridge , and which flow into the Fuhse at Bruchmachtersen . The upper of the three reservoirs for the operation of the mills were created in 1913 at the current location, the two lower ones in 1932/33. In the past, the reservoirs had been higher up, but they were overgrown and therefore relocated. The area around the Sukopsmühlen has been a landscape protection area since July 14, 1941 .

Upper Sukops Mill

House of the Upper Sukopsmühle

The upper Sukopsmühle was first mentioned in writing in 1465 as "Suckops mole prove bovem dem Dorpe to Machtersen", the owners were the lords of Salder . A miller in the Sukop family was first mentioned in 1637 when Jacob von Salder gave Hansen Saucopp the upper mill. The Sukop family ran the mill until 1730, later the Borns and Becker families are called millers.

In 1906 the mill received a new undershot water wheel, in 1922 this was replaced by a water turbine, which was later supported by two diesel engines with 20 and 11 hp. Both diesel engines were scrapped after 1945 and replaced by electric motors; the electricity required for this was obtained from the Helmstedt overland center . The mill stopped operating in 1962.

Lower Sukops Mill

Lower Sukops Mill

The lower Sukopsmühle was first mentioned in writing around 1490 in a list of goods by the von Salder men, who also owned this mill. In 1627 a Müller Saucopf is called, from then on the mill remained in the possession of the Sukop family until it was closed in 1940.

Dutch mill

In 1870 Friedrich Becker, the owner of the upper mill at the time, had a Dutch windmill with three grinding courses built near his mill. After this was badly damaged in a storm in 1891, it was no longer repaired and later removed.
