Welf I. († September 3 of an unknown year) is the verifiable ancestor of the Guelph dynasty and is documented as a count in 819.
biography
Welf I was married to the Saxon Heilwig, who was named as Abbess of Chelles around 826 (probably after his death) .
His ascent began with the two marriages he concluded for his two daughters with members of the Carolingian family : the elder Judith married Emperor Ludwig the Pious , while the younger Hemma married his son Ludwig the Germans .
