The Aeroflot flight 5143 ( flight number : SU5143) was a scheduled flight of Aeroflot from Qarshi to Leningrad (today Saint Petersburg ), which ended on July 10, 1985 with the crash of a Tupolev Tu-154 near Uchquduq . All 200 occupants were killed in the accident.

plane

The plane was a seven-year-old Tupolev Tu-154B-2 ( Mark : CCCP-85311), the three engines of the type Kuznetsov NK-8-2U equipped.

Inmates

The crew consisted of the flight captain Oleg Pavlovich Belissow, the first officer Anatoly Timofejewitsch Posjumski, the flight engineer Garri Nikolajewitsch Argejew, the navigator Abduwachit Sultanowitsch Mansurow and five flight attendants .

There were 191 passengers on board, including 52 children between the ages of 5 and 12. Because there wasn't enough seating, the children had to sit on their parents' laps.

course

The Tupolev Tu-154 took off from Qarshi Airport at 11 p.m., four hours late, and climbed at the maximum rate of climb, with the aircraft supposed to maintain a speed of 470  km / h . At about 11:41 p.m. the Tu-154 reached its cruising altitude of 11,600 meters (38,100 feet ) at a speed of only 400 km / h and went into level flight . This low speed, which is just above the demolition speed at this height , led to vibrations. The pilots mistakenly assumed that the engine was compressor pumping and set the thrust levers to idle thrust twice in a row. The speed dropped to 290 km / h and the angle of attack increased to approx. 25 °, which resulted in a stall on the wings and a stall in the engines. The Tu-154 went into a flat spin and tumbled in a steep spiral. The captain gave the order to shut down the three failed engines completely, whereupon the flight engineer did this. Then the pilots tried to switch on the auxiliary power unit . Later, at an altitude of 3,000 meters, they tried to use the ailerons to intercept the aircraft from a spin. However, the pilots could no longer bring the machine under control and said goodbye to their relatives. The captain said over the radio:

"Я тебя сильно люблю, дорогая, береги детей!"

“I love you very much, my dear. Take care of the children! "

as well as the first officer

"Прости, что был груб с тобой, и прощай!"

“I'm sorry that I was so rude to you. Farewell! "

- Oleg Pavlovich Belissov, captain of flight SU5143

The fully loaded aircraft struck with the tail at 11:46 p.m., 153 seconds after the stall occurred, with an average rate of descent of 80 m / s (290 km / h) with almost no forward movement in the Kyzylkum desert and caught fire . The crash site was 68 km northeast of Uchquduq (now Uzbekistan , then still part of the Soviet Union ) and was reached by helicopters an hour after the crash . All 200 occupants were killed in the accident. It is the worst airplane crash in Uzbekistan and the worst of a Tu-154.

Cause of accident

Debris field of the machine

The vocal recorder was destroyed by the force of the impact , making the investigation difficult. At an altitude of approx. 11,000 meters, flight SU5143 suddenly got into an unusually warm layer of air (approx. 16.5 ° C warmer than the normal temperature of approx. −56.5 ° C of the tropopause ). Because warmer air is thinner, engine power is reduced. This led to a loss of speed to 400 km / h. The automatic angle of attack and overload alarm, which was intended to warn of a critical angle of attack ( deep stall ), had also been switched off by the crew for unknown reasons.

The pilots had been awake for almost 24 hours at the time of the accident and thus violated the rest time regulations. In addition, it was very hot at Qarshi Airport at the time of take-off (+33 ° C), which put additional stress on the pilots, so that they probably fell asleep in the cockpit. They probably didn't wake up until the vibrations started and didn't notice the plane's slow speed.

After the accident, the maximum altitude of a fully loaded Tu-154 was only allowed to be 12,100 meters instead of 12,500 meters. In addition, later investigations and test flights showed that only aircraft that had been equipped with a special parachute could be steered out of the flat spin.
