Toʻrtkoʻl ( Cyrillic - Uzbek Тўрткўл; Karakalpakisch Toʻrtkuʻl or Төрткүл; Russian Турткуль ; also Turtkul ; until 1920 Petroalexandrowsk ) is an independent city and capital of a district of the same name in Karakalpakistan ( Uzbekistan ). Toʻrtkoʻl is 105 m above sea level and has 52,424 inhabitants (calculation for 2009), the 1991 census showed 36,300 inhabitants.
Toʻrtkoʻl is the southernmost city of the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakistan and was its capital until 1932. Since the city is unfavorably located on the Amu Darya and the protection from its floods devoured many resources, the capital of Karakalpakistan was finally relocated to the more central Nukus , which had been newly founded.
The mean temperatures are 28 ° C in July and −5.1 ° C in January.
