Carlos Mendes (born December 25, 1980 in Mineola , New York ) is an American football player .
He plays the defender for the New York Cosmos in the second highest North American division, the North American Soccer League .
He also has Portuguese nationality.
Career
college
Mendes began his active football career in 1998 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk , Virginia . From 1998 until his departure in 2001 he played a total of 72 games for the soccer team at the university and had a record of eleven goals scored and 25 assists .
Long Island Rough Riders
In 2002 Mendes got into professional football and completed his first appearances for the Long Island Rough Riders , who at that time were active in the third-rate USL D3 Pro League . After ten appearances in the regular season, he was first with the team in the Atlantic Conference and even won in the end in the playoffs .
Rochester Raging Rhinos
2003 followed the change to the second highest division, the USL A-League , to the local Rochester Raging Rhinos . For the Rhinos , he made a total of 33 championship appearances and one hit in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
MetroStars / New York Red Bulls
Shortly before the 2005 season , Mendes signed a contract with the MetroStars in the highest North American soccer league, Major League Soccer . In 2008 he and his team even made it to the MLS Cup of the 2008 season , where they failed in a 3-1 defeat at Columbus Crew . Mendes has been used as a defensive midfielder for most of that season.
On March 26, 2011, he was the sixth player to complete 10,000 minutes of play for New York.
On November 30, 2011, the Red Bulls did not withdraw the option to extend Mendes' contract for a year. He then took part in the 2011 MLS Re-Entry Draft. In the first round of this draft, he moved to the Columbus Crew on December 5, 2011.

At Columbus he played 12 games and moved to New York Cosmos a year later.
Trivia
In 2005, Mendes was the first Old Dominion University graduate to be signed to an MLS club.
