The New York Cosmos are an American football - Franchise of the North American Soccer League from Hempstead , New York . The team will play in the National Independent Soccer Association from 2020 . The franchise was founded in 2010 and sees itself as a new edition of the former North American Soccer League club New York Cosmos . The club is the record champions of the new NASL with three titles.

The home games are played at the James M. Shuart Stadium .

The former Cosmos player Pelé announced the return of the club in August 2010 and the intended participation in Major League Soccer .

history

After the Cosmos ceased operations in 1985, the club's last managing director, G. Peppe Pinton, continued the New York Cosmos Youth Centers established in 1977. He also took over the rights for team names. When Major League Soccer was installed in 1996, there were repeated requests for permission to take over the name Cosmos, both from MetroStars and later from the New York Red Bulls . Pinton hesitated each time to release the name because he was afraid that the buyer or the MLS would not preserve the history and tradition of the former NASL club.

After several franchises took over old NASL names, e.g. B. Portland Timbers or Vancouver Whitecaps , Pinton changed his mind. In August 2009 it was announced that he had sold the rights to the Englishman Paul Kemsley, the former Vice President of Tottenham Hotspur . He chairs a group that has made it its goal to establish the New York Cosmos in the MLS. Pelé announced the return of the New Yorkers on August 1, 2010 and has been Honorary President of the organization since then. In mid-January, the former soccer player Éric Cantona was hired as sports director. Together with the former MLS player Cobi Jones, he is supposed to advertise the new Cosmos in order to attract players. The former striker, former owner of the NASL team, Giorgio Chinaglia , who died in 2012 , was also the club's “international ambassador”.

The first game of the Cosmos took place on August 5th, 2011. For Paul Scholes' farewell game , Éric Cantona put together a team of international players and Cosmos U-23 players. Manchester United won 6-0. The team included Gary Neville , Patrick Vieira , Fabio Cannavaro , Robert Pirès and Brian McBride .

On October 26, 2011, the organization announced that Kemsley would no longer be available as CEO.

On July 13, 2012 it was announced that the New York Cosmos will compete in the second-rate North American Soccer League from 2013 . In November 2012, the former Venezuelan international Giovanni Savarese was appointed head coach. At the beginning of December 2012 it was announced that the club would only participate in the NASL in the second half of 2013.

On August 3, 2013, the team started their first NASL season. With a 2-1 win over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, they also secured their first win of the season. At the end of the season the Cosmos reached the first place of the fall season and stood in the final of the so-called Soccer Bowl, which was won 1-0 against the Atlanta Silverbacks .

Two years later, after winning the spring season, this success could be repeated with a final victory over Ottawa Fury , making the Cosmos now the league's record champions. The 2016 title was also secured.

After the NASL 2018 did not take place, the Cosmos switched to the newly founded National Independent Soccer Association for the 2020/21 season .

Stadion

On September 25, 2012 it was announced that the New York Cosmos will play their games in the 11,929-seat James M. Shuart Stadium  - where the old Cosmos played in 1972 and 1973. This is located on the Hofstra University campus , around 20 miles from downtown New York City.

The Cosmos are planning to build a new stadium, tentatively named New York Cosmos Stadium. This will have 25,000 seats and be located on the horse racing track in Belmont Park in Elmont (New York) . Elmont is located on the border between the New York borough of Queens and Nassau County (New York) . The plans are currently under review with the Empire State Development Corporation.
