Paul Scholes (born November 16, 1974 in Salford , Greater Manchester ) is a former English football player and current coach. Scholes played his entire career exclusively at Manchester United, with a total of over 700 appearances, he is the player with the third most appearances for the club. He also only spent his youth at Man United .

The midfielder began his career at Manchester United in 1991 and was a non-stop member of the club's professional squad from 1994 to 2011. On May 31, 2011, Scholes announced his retirement, but made his comeback in the FA Cup against Manchester City on January 8, 2012, and finally ended his career at the end of the season in May 2013. He won eleven English championships , three FA -Cup trophies , two league cup editions and the Champions League in 1999 and 2008 . For the English national team he scored 14 goals in 66 international matches between 1997 and 2004 and took part in two world ( 1998 , 2002 ) and two European championship finals ( 2000 , 2004 ).

With above-average technical skills, great agility and passability, Scholes was considered one of the best Premier League players of his time; Due to his physical play, he is also one of the most frequently warned players. Outside the square, Scholes was considered reserved and modest. His fellow players and coaches often said he had an exemplary and professional attitude.

The early years

Paul Scholes was born at Hope Hospital in Salford. When he was 18 months old, his parents moved him to Langley, where he attended St. Mary's Elementary School . His first football team was called Langley Furrow , but he made the greatest progress in his school team, which proved to be very productive. He then attended the secondary school Cardinal Langley RC High School in Middleton, where Scholes got to know not only football but also cricket .

The athletic talent of Scholes was discovered after he began to attend the football school in Oldham regularly. Brian Kidd was employed as a youth coach for Manchester United at the time and took him into the youth department, where Scholes then met other talents such as Nicky Butt , Ryan Giggs , David Beckham and Gary and Phil Neville .

After finishing school in the summer of 1991, Paul Scholes signed his first training contract with “United”. The still very small and skinny-looking newcomer had no part in winning the FA Youth Cup in 1992, but a year later he found himself in the final team, which lost to Leeds United .

Professional career

In the club

The first professional years as a striker (1993–1997)

Scholes was accepted into the professional squad in 1993. For his first appearances in the first "team" he came only at the beginning of the 1994/95 season. Three days after the debut in the League Cup against Port Vale , in which he scored twice to win 2-1, he celebrated his debut in the Premier League on September 24, 1994 against Ipswich Town . This was lost despite another goal with 2: 3, but Scholes was now in the extended circle of the "Red Devils". In contrast to his later role as a creative player in central midfield, Scholes was often to be found in the attack center in this early period due to his scoring risk. He served in a large part of his 17 league appearances in the 1994/95 season on substitutions as a "joker". In sporting terms, Scholes had to be satisfied with second places in the English championship (behind the Blackburn Rovers ) and in the FA Cup (defeat in the final against Everton ). He had two good opportunities to equalize, especially in the 1-0 defeat by Everton after being substituted on.

Due to constant performance and the fact that with Éric Cantona (suspension) and Mark Hughes (change to Chelsea ) two strikers were not (any longer) available, Scholes came to the side of the newly signed Andrew Cole in the 1995/96 season regular operations. He scored fourteen goals in competitive matches and won his first club trophies with the " double " from the English championship and cup. However, he had not yet been able to fight for a regular place and although he won the Premier League again the following year, his opportunities were limited - only three goals in 16 league games in the 1996/97 season prove this.

Winning the triple and further successes (1997-2005)

The key to his henceforth positive sporting development was that coach Alex Ferguson pulled him back into midfield in the 1997/98 season after Roy Keane's injury-related loss . Although the season did not bring any titles, but in the following season 1998/99 the United team swung with Scholes in the "switching center" to great success. In addition to winning the English championship again, he scored a goal in the victorious FA Cup final against Newcastle United (2-0) and especially in the Champions League was an important factor until reaching the final. However , Scholes had to watch the 2-1 in the final against FC Bayern Munich , as he saw his second yellow card in the semi-final second leg against Juventus Turin and was therefore suspended.

In the following two years, 2000 and 2001, Scholes defended the English championship title with United - now the fourth and fifth edition in his collection - until the signing of the Argentine international Juan Sebastián Verón caused changes in midfield. In order to be able to accommodate him in a team with Verón, Ferguson often offered him as a lagging tip in the 4-4-1-1 system behind Ruud van Nistelrooy , while behind him Verón and Roy Keane are in the central midfield again in the Tried game design. In European away games, Scholes was often allowed to play in the preferred midfield, but the interplay made in this way ensured that both Scholes were in shape and United remained untitled.

In the next championship season 2002/03 Scholes returned to sporting top performances, came with 20 competitive matches to his hitherto best yield and a year later - Verón had left the club in the meantime - the third FA Cup success followed, to which he overall contributed four goals. The defense of the English Cup failed in 2005, mainly because Jens Lehmann from Arsenal FC saved his penalty kick on penalties.

Second phase of success and resignation (2005-2011)

For almost the entire second half of the 2005/06 season, Scholes was absent from the team. This was due to an eye disease that restricted Scholes' vision, who had also been diagnosed with asthma at the age of 21, and seriously jeopardized the continuation of his career - a fear that did not come true, but his eyesight also remained Subsequent time clouded with a slight blurring.

After a titleless period of three years, Scholes won the English championship again with United in the 2006/07 season. He had played his 500th competitive game for Manchester United on October 22, 2006 in the game against Liverpool, which had only been achieved by eight other players before him. Also worth mentioning were two suspensions within just over a month. After a foul against Xabi Alonso in the 1-0 away win against Liverpool on March 3, 2007, he saw the red card in the quarter-final first leg against AS Roma again. The Premier League success was the beginning of a series of three league titles in a row and although Scholes was out with a cruciate ligament damage for three months in the early stages of the 2007/08 season, this season brought the greatest triumph of his career. In his 100th Champions League appearance, he kept the semi-final first leg 0-0 at FC Barcelona and scored the only goal in the second leg that maneuvered his club into the final. In contrast to his yellow card suspension nine years earlier, he now also played the final, in which he sustained an injury and was replaced by Ryan Giggs before the decision on penalties - here Manchester United were successful against Chelsea FC .

In August 2008 he acted in the Super Cup against Zenit Saint Petersburg (1: 2) due to deliberate handball a yellow-red card in the final phase; two more field references followed in 2009. Much more positive headlines prepared him for the induction into the English Football Hall of Fame and the 600th appearance for United in the 2-0 win against Portsmouth FC in April 2009. Another interesting milestone was for the midfielder, who only won his first two league cup trophies in 2009 and 2010, reached the 100-goal mark in the Premier League on March 6, 2010 against Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-0).

On May 31, 2011, Scholes ended his career for the time being.

Comeback (2012-2013)

On January 7, 2012, Scholes announced his comeback at Manchester United and took over the shirt number 22. On January 8, he played a competitive game in the FA Cup against Manchester City for the first time. A week later, he scored the first goal in his 3-0 home win against Bolton Wanderers in his first league game after the comeback . In May 2012, Scholes extended his contract with Manchester United for another year until 2013. With the championship title in the 2012/13 season and 718 competitive games for United, he ended his career.

National team

Scholes achieved his first international success in 1993 with the England U-18 team, when he won the U-18 European Championship alongside players like Gary Neville and top scorer Robbie Fowler after beating Turkey 1-0 in the final in Nottingham .

Almost four years later he made his debut on May 24, 1997 at the Old Trafford Stadium at home as a substitute against South Africa (2-1) for England's senior team . Eleven days later he scored the 2-0 goal in his first appearance against Italy and in lockstep with the increasing importance in midfield of Manchester United, Scholes also conquered a regular place at the "Three Lions", which is reflected in it said that coach Glenn Hoddle let him act in all four games of the 1998 World Cup in France as an attacking midfielder in the 3-4-1-2 system behind the two tops Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham or Michael Owen . He also managed to score a 2-0 win in the opening game against Tunisia .

In March 1999 Scholes scored all three goals for a 3-1 home win against Poland in a European Championship qualifier and in November of the same year his two goals for a 2-0 away win against Scotland were decisive for the play-off success. Although the Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands ended with a disappointing preliminary round, he had underpinned his increasing status in the team under the direction of Kevin Keegan and maintained his regular position in the middle of the field alongside David Beckham , Paul Ince and Dennis Wise / Steve McManaman . Like two years before, he scored in the first group game; his 1-0 opening goal was not enough, however, as England lost 3-2 to Portugal . At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , Scholes remained “first choice” under Sven-Göran Eriksson in midfield center, which he formed in four out of five games with club colleague Nicky Butt . It was only with the advent of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard , who both increasingly claimed the central midfield position, that Scholes' national team career came to an end. Between June 2001 and 2004 he was without a goal of his own for three years and after being substituted in all four games at Euro 2004 - against hosts Portugal after just 57 minutes - Scholes, who had been displaced by Lampard to the unfamiliar left midfield position, announced in August In 2004, after 66 games and 14 goals, he retired from the national team. He officially stated that he wanted to take care of the family more and concentrate on his club career.

Speculations after Eriksson's resignation in July 2006 in relation to a comeback under Steve McClaren were dashed, as were mind games in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa under coach Fabio Capello just four years later . In the latter case, the generally available Scholes refused to return, referring to the interest that had been expressed too quickly.

Club owner & coaching career

In March 2014, Scholes bought the Northern Premier League club Salford City with his former club colleagues, the "Class of 92", Ryan Giggs , Nicky Butt , and the brothers Gary and Phil Neville . Scholes has acted as CEO of the association since the purchase . Together with Phil Neville, he looked after Salford City as an interim coach for a game in January 2015. After three promotions, the club has been playing in the National League , the fifth highest English division, since the 2018/19 season .

In February 2019, Scholes took over the coaching position at the fourth division club Oldham Athletic . For this he resigned his office as director at Salford City, but kept his club shares. Just a month later he resigned from his coaching position.
