Dennis Frank Wise (born December 16, 1966 in Kensington , London ) is a former English football player and was last coach of the English third division club Leeds United until January 2008 .

As an England international , he made 21 appearances and scored his only goal for England on his debut against Turkey . The three-time FA Cup winner and long-time Chelsea FC player was also featured in all three Euro 2000 group games . His last international match was in 2000 under the then national coach Howard Wilkinson .

Player career

Wimbledon FC

Dennis Wise started his football career at Southampton FC but then moved to Wimbledon FC at the age of 18 after disagreements with coach Lawrie McMenemy .

There he became a member of the so-called " Crazy Gang ", which caused a sensation in the English elite class as an outsider after promotion to the First Division in 1986 and two years later sensationally with the high favorites Liverpool FC in the FA Cup final 1-0 beat. The midfielder played such a large part in the club's sporting highs that he was voted the club's best player at the end of the season.

Chelsea FC

For the then record transfer fee of Wimbledon FC of 1.6 million pounds, Wise moved to Chelsea FC . There he spent eleven years and became a constant in the “Blues” in the 1990s as a combat-focused midfielder in 445 games. To date, only five players have played more games for Chelsea than Wise, who scored a total of 76 goals - including a particularly important equalizer in San Siro against AC Milan in the group stage of the 1999/2000 Champions League season . As team captain, he led the club to win the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, to win the league cup in 1998 and in the same year to triumph in the European Cup winners' competition . After the new coach Claudio Ranieri decided to lower the average age of the squad, the "Chelsea Player of the Year" of 1998 and 2000 left Chelsea in June 2001 for another £ 1.6 million and joined Leicester City .

Despite his success in Chelsea, Wise was considered an " enfant terrible " due to several indisciplines on and off the field . In 1995 he was accused of assaulting a taxi driver in London and was sentenced to three months in prison for this - after a successful appeal process he was acquitted of the allegations. Nonetheless, this controversy led then coach Glenn Hoddle to remove Wise from the captaincy. Four years later he hit the headlines again when he was accused of “biting” Marcelino Elena in a European Cup Winners' Cup against RCD Mallorca . During the 1998/99 season, Wise, who saw thirteen red cards during his professional career, missed 15 games through suspension alone.

Leicester City

His time at Leicester was unsuccessful and Wise was sacked after just 17 championship games in September 2002 after breaking the jaw of teammate Callum Davidson during pre-season preparation in Finland . Wise subsequently became an unpopular figure in Leicester, as he was resented there for repeatedly calling his untimely demise "unfair" and, in the opinion of the supporters, previously with coach Peter Taylor the sporting and economic decline - up to and including bankruptcy proceedings. had accelerated. The transfer fee, which was felt to be too high for the then almost 35-year-old Wise, had an effect.

Millwall FC

Wise then moved to Millwall FC in the second division Second Division and was there player-coach . He led his new club to the FA Cup final in 2004, where he lost 3-0 to Manchester United . By participating in the final, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup , making it only the second English club that did not play in the top division and was still allowed to play in a major European club competition. In the first round of the UEFA Cup, however, Millwall lost to Ferencváros Budapest and after a dispute with the new presidium at the end of the season, Wise left the club.

Southampton FC

Free transfer Wise moved to Southampton FC in the summer of 2005 , where he played twelve championship games, in which he scored one goal. After the resignation of coach Harry Redknapp , he took over the management of the team on an interim basis with Dave Bassett , but then turned his back on the club in December 2005 after the club management officially entrusted George Burley with the successor to the coach.

Coventry City

On January 19, 2006, Wise signed a performance-related contract with Coventry City , which paid him per use, and thus played again under Micky Adams , who had already coached him at Leicester City. There he experienced a brief high phase, scored one goal in each of the first games and finally ended his active career after 13 league games.

Career as a coach

Swindon Town

On May 18, 2006, he was hired by the fourth division club Swindon Town , who had just been relegated to the Football League Two , as a coach, with his former Chelsea team-mate Gustavo Poyet being placed as an assistant . The coaching team led the team to six wins in the first seven games and Wise thus earned the title of “Coach of the Month” in the fourth highest division in addition to leading the table.

His first loss as coach of Swindon Town came in the game against AFC Wrexham at Racecourse Ground , which was followed by the second bankruptcy - and first home defeat - against Peterborough United . This put the club in second place behind the Wycombe Wanderers .

Leeds United

After Wise had been brought into connection with the vacant coaching position at Leeds United on September 20, 2006 after Kevin Blackwell's dismissal , he and Gustavo Poyet were given permission to start negotiations with the troubled second division team on October 23, 2006. Just one day later, the team's commitment was announced, but they still had to watch that Leeds United left the League Cup with a 3-1 defeat against Southend United . In one of his first acts, the new coach filled the captaincy and appointed the physically robust midfielder Kevin Nicholls instead of Paul Butler as team captain, and Shaun Derry instead of Gary Kelly as his deputy.

The first game as Leeds coach saw Southend United again as opponents for Wise, but they could now be defeated 2-0. Nevertheless, despite a 2-1 win against Hull City , Leeds United later finished bottom of the table for the first time, as Southend beat Birmingham City on the same day and now had the better goal difference. The captain's question turned out to be turbulent, as Nicholls asked for clearance for a loan to his old club - and relegation competitor - Luton Town . Wise immediately removed Nicholls from the team and made Jonathan Douglas the new team captain. For a short time the club drew hope again when Wise and his team left the relegation ranks for the first time after November 2006 after victories against promotion aspirants Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle , but finally they slipped back into the relegation zone, so that they won on the last day of the game with at least eight goals difference and a loss for Hull City. After the descent could not be prevented sportily, an additional ten-point penalty even provided for the fall to the bottom of the table. In addition, the association had to register for bankruptcy. Nevertheless, Wise remained loyal to the club for the subsequent 2007/08 season in the third-rate Football League One .

In this new season, the team supervised by Wise started with another 15-point penalty that the Football League had imposed on the club. The club continuously reduced this negative score in the first games with the best start to the season in the club's history and for this performance Wise was awarded the title of the best English third division coach in August 2007. When finally Poyet left the club towards Tottenham Hotspur towards the end of October 2007 to become assistant to Juande Ramos there, Wise Dave Bassett was made available. The new duo was unable to keep the series of unbeaten games on November 3 due to a 3-1 loss to Carlisle United and despite a subsequent stabilization, Wise left the club on January 28, 2008 in the direction of Newcastle United to be there at the side of Kevin Keegan to play a leading role primarily in the youth field and with player commitments.
