Racecourse Ground (Gaelic: Y Cae Râs ) is a multi-purpose stadium in Wrexham , North Wales .

Wrexham AFC home game

The stadium, which is mainly used by the AFC Wrexham football club as a venue for home games, also hosts rugby union games. The Scarlets rugby team and Liverpool FC reserve team played some home games in the stadium last year.

The stadium is the largest in North Wales and is therefore sometimes used as the venue for international matches for Welsh football and rugby teams.

Stadium details

The stadium offers 15,500 spectators, of which 10,500 are seats. The seats are distributed over four grandstands.

  • The Kop : General admission rank, which, like many grandstands in British stadiums, is named after the Battle of Spion Kop . Located directly behind the gate, it is mainly used as a fan block by supporters of the AFC Wrexham and is therefore considered to be the place with the best atmosphere in the stadium.
  • The Sainsbury's Stand : Built in 1972, the grandstand contains the booths, club offices and entertainment.
  • The Eric Roberts Builders Stand : Originally called Marstons Stand , it is reserved for away supporters.
  • The Pryce Griffiths Stand : The newest part of the stadium includes a television studio, conference rooms and eight VIP rooms. The naming rights were sold on July 8, 2006 and therefore a renaming is expected to take place.

history

The course has been used by AFC Wrexham as a venue since 1872, with the exception of a four-year trip to the Recreation Ground in Rhosddu when the then owner, Wrexham Cricket Club , increased the rental fee. The square had originally been used for cricket games and horse races since 1807 . This makes the Racecourse Ground the second oldest stadium in which football is played today.

On April 2, 1906, the stadium was the first venue for an international match when Wales and Ireland faced each other. About 6000 spectators saw a 4-4 tie. A photo taken during the game is considered to be the oldest photo documenting an official soccer game.

In 1957, the record attendance of 34,445 spectators was measured as AFC Wrexham in FA Cup against Manchester United took. Two years later the first floodlight system was inaugurated in the stadium.

In 1978, after promotion to the Second Division, the stadium was expanded to include the Marstons stand , which is now called Eric Roberts Builders Stand . The last expansion so far was made in 1999 when The Pryce Griffiths booth , which offers 3500 seats, was inaugurated with its conference rooms, while Sainsbury's booth and Eric Roberts Builders booth were converted into pure seating.
