Carl Magnus Freiherr von der Pahlen ( Russian Матвей Иванович Пален , Freiherr von Astrau * February 19 jul. / 2. March  1779 greg. In Tallinn , † May 20 jul. / 1. June  1863 greg. Gut Palmse , Estonia ) was a Russian general and politician from the German Baltic Pahlen family .

Life

Carl Magnus, son of Hans von der Pahlen (1740–1817) and Beate Countess Stenbock (1759–1845), grandson Arend Diedrich von der Pahlens (1706–1753), came from the Astrau line of a family introduced in 1679 to the baron class of the Swedish knighthood . His father was a landlord on Palms ( Palmse ) and Wannamois ( Vanamõisa ), Estonian district administrator and court president of Reval, as well as imperial Russian lieutenant colonel and privy councilor .

Military career

Carl Magnus began his military career at the age of 18 in the Riga Dragoon Regiment of the Russian Army . Carl Magnus took part in several campaigns, first in the war of 1806/1807 against Napoleon . He served as a lieutenant in the Cavalier Guards Regiment and as adjutant to Major General (later Lieutenant General) Nikolai Alexejewitsch Tutschkow. In this function he proved himself, so that the Prussian lieutenant general von L'Estocq him with King Friedrich Wilhelm III. proposed for the order pour le merite. With the highest cabinet order of December 13, 1807, Friedrich Wilhelm awarded him this medal. He also distinguished himself in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Wars of Liberation , for example on April 2, 1813 as a colonel in the battle near Lüneburg , where Prussian-Russian troops under Baron von Dörnberg defeated a French division under General Morand. He was made lieutenant general and later general of the cavalry .

Political offices and duties

After the peace agreement in 1815 , Carl Magnus Freiherr von der Pahlen was still a member of the Russian army (the tsar even appointed him his adjutant general ), but he was increasingly entrusted with political tasks. He was appointed to the Imperial Council, was elected Senator for Estonia from 1821 to 1827 , went on a diplomatic mission to Sweden in 1827/1828 and was curator of the University of Dorpat from 1828 to 1835 . He was a member of the Estonian Knighthood and was also admitted to the Courland Knighthood on April 8, 1833. From 1830 to 1845 he was governor general of the Russian Baltic provinces of Livonia , Estonia and Courland and military governor of Riga .

He was married twice, from 1817 to Elisabeth von Essen (1797–1820) - the only child of Lieutenant General Magnus Gustav von Essen - and from 1823 to Katharina Arvelius (1800–1869).

He spent his twilight years on his estates Palms ( Palmse ) and Arbafer ( Arbavere ) in Estonia .
