Anton Wilhelm von L'Estocq (born August 16, 1738 in Celle , †  January 5, 1815 in Berlin ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

origin

Anton Wilhelm came from a Huguenot family that originally lived in Picardy and Champagne . He was the son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel a. D. Ludwig August L'Estocq (April 14, 1688; † January 3, 1747) and his wife Ilse Sophie, née von Grabow, widowed von Hohenhorst (* 1700; † August 20, 1738).

Military career

L'Estocq joined the Berlin cuirassier regiment Gens d'armes in 1757 as an Estandartenjunker . During the Seven Years' War he took part in the battles of Zorndorf , Kunersdorf and Torgau and became second lieutenant in 1760 . After a battle near Langensalza , he was awarded the order Pour le mérite in 1761 .

In 1768 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and moved to the regiment of hussar general Hans Joachim von Zieten . He was Zieten adjutant and 1771 Staff Captain 1783 Major 1790 Lieutenant Colonel 1793 Colonel . In 1790 King Friedrich Wilhelm II appointed him commander of the 2nd battalion of the Hussar Regiment “von Eben” No. 2.

Coalition wars

In the First Coalition War against France , his unit was involved in the fighting near Kaiserslautern , Morsbrunn and Trippstadt . In 1794 he took command of the Hussar Regiment "von Göcking" No. 2 . After the Peace of Basel in 1795, his regiment was deployed to secure the border against France in Westphalia . In 1797 he was regimental commander of the Hussars "from Czettritz" No. 1, . First he had to fight bands of robbers in County Mark . In August 1802 he occupied the prince-bishopric of Paderborn and anticipated the incorporation of the bishopric by Prussia, sanctioned by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 .

L'Estocq was promoted to major general in 1798 and transferred to New East Prussia in 1803 . He took over the supreme command of the Prussian troops in the region and was appointed chief of the hussar regiment "von Günther" No. 9 . In 1805 he was promoted to lieutenant general .

During the Fourth Coalition War , he took part in the Battle of Prussian Eylau with his Chief of Staff Gerhard von Scharnhorst in 1807 and was then awarded the Order of the Black Eagle .

After the defeat in the Battle of Friedland he was a member of an immediate investigation commission set up by the king .

On November 12, 1808 he was appointed governor of the Berlin residence , and in 1812 he was promoted to general of the cavalry. On March 15, 1813, four military governments (1813-1815) were formed on the highest cabinet orders from Breslau to lead the war against France . The authority, known as the 1st Military Government between the Elbe and the Oder, should be supported by the Military Governor of L'Estocq and the Civil Governor and Privy Councilor of State Dr. Johann August Sack . This was about the reorganization of the General Commission for billeting, catering and marching. They appointed the government building inspector Salomo Sachs to deal with billeting matters . In 1814 Anton Wilhelm was appointed governor of Breslau. On August 13, 1814, he was granted his farewell with an annual pension of 6,000 thalers .

L'Estocq was buried on January 8, 1815 in the cemetery of the Berlin Garrison Church.

family

L'Estocq married Hedwig Gottliebe Maria von Brandt (* 1752 - 22 September 1776) in Wredenhagen in 1775 . After her death on June 16, 1780 in Moellenbeck, he married Franziska Friederike von Koppelow (* October 14, 1759, † October 16, 1856), the chief stewardess of Princess Wilhelm of Prussia. The two marriages resulted in the following children:
