List of the governors of Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The governor of Berlin was the supreme commander in the residence - and capital of the Prussian state . The king often appointed a military dignitary to the governor who, for his generally recognized service to the state , enjoyed authority not only in the military but also in civil circles . The governor was responsible for maintaining public safety and order and, in the event of war, for defending Berlin. He oversaw communications between the top civil and military authorities in the capital. The disciplinary authority over the troops of the Berlin garrison lay with him, in contrast to the other garrisons, where it was held by the respective troop commander. The governor reported directly to the king on all these matters. As a governorate, he had a staff of officers from all branches of service and from military medical and veterinary services. His representative was the city commandant .

From 1706 to 1732, the official residence of the Governor in later was Kronprinzenpalais building referred to in the street Unter den Linden in Berlin , then in the Governor House in the King's Road . In the 19th century the Palais Wrangel at Pariser Platz  3 was also used.
