Joachim Rüdiger von der Goltz (born April 6, 1620 in Klausdorf , today in Gmina Wałcz ; † June 26, 1688 in Dresden ) was a Danish and Electoral Saxon field marshal .

Life

He was the son of the Polish Rittmeister Georg von der Goltz (1591-1670) and his wife Louise von Flemming († 1642).

Von der Goltz initially served in the imperial army under his cousin, General Feldzeugmeister Martin Maximilian von der Goltz . From 1648 to 1654 he was Maréchal de camp of the French army in the fighting against Spain and civil unrest. In August 1653, King Louis XIV awarded him three Bourbon lilies to augment his coat of arms and the French baronate for the entire family in recognition of his services .

In 1654 Goltz joined the Brandenburg service as a colonel. From 1674 he was General of the Infantry and Governor of Berlin . In 1675 he joined the Danish service as field marshal while maintaining his Brandenburg charge.

In 1680, with the approval of the Great Elector, he entered the service of the Electoral Saxon as General Field Marshal. At the relief of Vienna he was the leader of the Saxon army . The victory over the Turks is said to have been largely due to his intervention. Goltzgasse in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after him in 1908 .

family

He was married several times. His first wife was Eva Elisabeth von Massow from the Treten house; the couple must have separated soon. She died in Treblin after 1701. In 1654 he married Margarethe Catharina von Burgsdorff († 1692). She was the daughter of Konrad von Burgsdorff . The marriage was divorced in 1674. He then had three sons who were legitimized by Emperor Leopold I :

  • Georg Caspar (born February 10, 1674; † 1696 or 1697), legitimized on March 10, 1678
  • Johann Rüdiger (* 1675 - † May 10, 1678), legitimized on March 10, 1678
  • Balthasar Wilhelm (* 1676; † 1702), legitimized on September 6, 1693
