Philipp Carl Christian Freiherr von Canstein (born February 4, 1804 in Eschwege , † November 5, 1877 in Kassel ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Philipp Carl was the son of Captain Christian Ludwig von Canstein (born July 29, 1766, † June 19, 1813 in Ziegenhain ) and his wife Christine, née von Wurmb .

Military career

On August 1, 1819 Canstein joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment in Stettin as a cadet and was promoted to secondary lieutenant in 1821 . This was followed by several assignments at the cadet school in Berlin until he came to Upper Silesia as a major in the 23rd Infantry Regiment in 1849 . In Breslau Canstein was in 1857 as a lieutenant colonel in command of the 11th Infantry Regiment , and in 1863 he took over command of the 11th Infantry Brigade in Brandenburg an der Havel . He led this in the German-Danish War of 1864 when storming the Düppeler Schanzen . For this he was awarded the Pour le Mérite on June 7th .

After the war against Denmark, Canstein became commander of the 15th division in Cologne on January 4, 1866 , which he led in the Battle of Königgrätz on July 3, 1866 during the German War , and for whose use he took the oak leaves to the Orden Pour le Mérite was awarded. In April 1869 Canstein became governor of Magdeburg . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was the commander in the Marche and governor of Berlin . On November 8, 1871 Canstein was awarded the Grand Commander of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with board for disposition made.

family

Canstein's first marriage since March 19, 1839, was married to Marie von Troschke (1817–1841), the daughter of Lieutenant General Ernst von Troschke (1780–1847). After her death, on July 29, 1844, he married Adelheid von Krauseneck (1817–1888), daughter of Wilhelm von Krauseneck . One of his two sons was Ernst Raban von Canstein .
