origin

He came from an East Prussian noble family and was the son of the Prussian general of the infantry August Wilhelm von Neumann (1786–1865) and Amalie von Dresky (1788–1859).

Military career

Neumann was transferred from the cadet corps on August 18, 1836 as a second lieutenant to the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot of the Prussian Army . In the further course of his military career, he was a lieutenant colonel from October 30, 1866 to July 6, 1868, in command of the Fusilier Regiment No. 38 . In the meantime promoted to colonel on December 31, 1866 with a patent dated October 30, 1866 , Neumann was then appointed commander of the 4th Guards Regiment on Foot . He led this regiment at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. Neumann was seriously wounded in the battle of Gravelotte . After his recovery he took part in the siege of Paris .

After the end of the war, Neumann was charged with the command of the 55th Infantry Brigade on June 3, 1871, with his regiment à la suite , shortly thereafter appointed commander and promoted to major general on August 18, 1871 . On February 13, 1874, he gave up the brigade and was appointed Commandant of Berlin. At the same time, from November 16, 1875, Neumann was entrusted with the management of the chief of the rural police. Promoted to lieutenant general on March 22, 1877, he was put up for disposal on November 2, 1878 with a pension .

Notes / individual evidence

  1. ^ Presumably Gustav took over the not yet officially approved name "von Neumann-Cosel" from his father August Wilhelm - in memory of his grandfather David von Neumann, who died in 1807 while defending the fortress of Cosel . In any case, he was not granted the Prussian permission to use the name during his lifetime (see: Neumann-Cosel ).
