Neumann-Cosel is the name of an East Prussian noble family .

history

The direct family line begins with David Neumann, who is mentioned in a document in 1734. He was a merchant in Königsberg and a landowner near Wehlau . His son, the later Prussian Major General David Neumann (1739-1807), was raised to hereditary nobility on June 10, 1779 in Berlin as Prime Lieutenant in the "von Rothkirch" Infantry Regiment No. 32 .

Name increase

In memory of the defense of the Upper Silesian fortress of Cosel against Napoleonic troops and their Bavarian allies during the 1806/07 campaign , which David von Neumann led as fortress commander, his son, the Prussian infantry general August Wilhelm von Neumann (1786–1865) , just like his sons the name increase "von Neumann-Cosel", without being legitimized to do so.
